It’s great to cheer with Liverpool’s supporters or admire the atmosphere at big clubs like Manchester United or Arsenal, but even at relatively smaller clubs in the Premier League you can enjoy the real English football atmosphere. Here are five underrated Premier League stadiums that will surprise you.
1. Selhurst Park
2. Goodison Park
3. Turf Moor
4. London Stadium
5. Bramell Lane
Classic and traditional
London is considered the football capital of Europe being home to seventeen football clubs. Next season, seven of those clubs will play in the Premier League including Crystal Palace at their beautiful Selhurst Park stadium. This stadium in south London breathes football and has a great ambience to make a match visit extra special.
Selhurst Park is located in the middle of a residential area, as it should be traditionally. You walk into the stadium through small concrete gates, which give the stadium a classic look. You can be very close to the field, so close that you can smell the grass and watch the action happen right in front of you. Or you can sit higher up the stands for a great overview of the game and take in the atmosphere from the boxes. In the background you can see the houses around the stadium. An old school setting to dream of! Book your football trip to Crystal Palace and experience English football in a traditional way!
Catch a game at before it’s too late
Singing ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ at Liverpool is definitely a great experience, but you can also expect a real football atmosphere at neighbouring Everton. Liverpool’s blue club have built up a hugely fanatical fan base over the years that makes every home game move up and down the stands. It’s great to stand in between and be a part of the atmosphere.
Everton have been playing at Goodison Park since 1892, which is within walking distance of the city centre. More matches have been played at the highest level in this stadium than in any other English stadium. But soon Everton will move. From the 2024-2025 season, The Toffees will head to Bramley-Moore Dock Stadium, a new stadium in Liverpool Harbour. So be quick to visit a game at Goodison Park before it’s too late.
One of the best Premier League Stadiums
Burnley is back at the highest level and that means Premier League football at Turf Moor. The stadium has been home to Burnley since 1883, making it the second-longest-used stadium in English professional football.
Turf Moor has experienced all the historic highlights of Burnley. Two league titles, one FA Cup and the Championship title in 2023. Burnley is a club that counts and you will notice that when you visit Turf Moor. Burnley fans are absolutely Premier League worthy and will be shouting their club to victory this season more than ever before.
Sing along to ‘I’m Forever Blowing Bubbles’
Last season’s sixth-place finish has done West Ham United’s supporters good. It marked the highest ranking since 1996 and made history at the London Stadium. The supporters have had to get used to the new décor after the move from Boleyn Ground to the new stadium, but now it feels more and more like home.
Secure your football trip to West Ham United. This year, spectators are finally allowed to attend the races again, which promises to be a true spectacle. After the summer break, there can finally be a public presence at the games again. Then the West Ham United supporters will wear the Claret and Blue with pride and sing along loudly to ‘I’m Forever Blowing Bubbles’. The Hammers have one of England’s most fanatical supporter groups and their current good performances create a positive atmosphere in east London. European football will be played at the London Stadium next season which promises to create a great atmosphere just as it used to be at Boleyn Ground.
Meet the true fans of Sheffield United
If you want to combine a match in Manchester with a visit to another city, you can go to Sheffield for more football. A train journey of around one hour takes you to the heart of England, where you’ll find Bramall Lane. An impressive stadium with space for around 32,000 visitors and a perfect destination for a (short) football trip to Sheffield.
On match days, there is a lively atmosphere around Bramall Lane. In the district of the stadium you will find several pubs where the local fans gather before the game, like the supporters pub The 188 Bar. Here you will meet the true fans of Sheffield United, who always keep coming to the club, despite the lack of success and the sale of many players. They are born as Sheffield United supporters, learn to live with it and come to Bramell Lane until they die. It is an unconditional love that you will experience in the stands, where you will be included in the group. And then – after a win or a loss – you return with everybody to the pub.
