In the 1934/1935 season, the Seville football club made its debut in the Primera División and immediately won its first major prize, the Copa del Rey. Sevilla won the Europa League no less than six times between 2005 and 2020, which makes the club record winners of this tournament.
Diego Armando Maradona is undoubtedly the most famous player ever to have played for Sevilla football club. He played for the Sevillistas in the 1992/1993 season. It was his last season in Europe before he returned to Argentina.
Estadio Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán is the stadium where Sevilla FC has played its home matches since 1958. The construction of the stadium started in 1956, and about two years later Sevilla played its first match in this stadium. It was a friendly against Real Jaén on 7 September 1958. The stadium is named after Sevilla’s then president Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán. He initiated the plans for the new stadium, but died just before its construction in 1956.
The stadium has two rings with nice red and white seats. It is beautiful and definitely worth seeing in real life. However, it is mainly the supporters who make the stadium into a magical place during a match. The passion and enthusiasm of the Sevillistas create a great atmosphere in Estadio Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán.

Real Betis Balompié, better known as Real Betis, was founded on 12 September 1907 by some footballers from Sevilla FC who separated from that club. Real Betis’ greatest success dates back to 1935, when the club won its first and so far only national title. After alternating periods, the club from southern Seville has been a stable mid-tier player at the highest level in Spain in recent years.
During the ‘Seville Derby’ (Real Betis v Sevilla FC) they play their arch-rival. The first derby between Real Betis and Sevilla FC took place in 1915, where Sevilla FC won in an exciting game (4-3). Since then, this city derby has been a charged match full of spectacle and passion, where underdog Betis often manages to rise above themselves.
Estadio Benito Villamarín, of Real Betis has been named after a former club president: Benito Villamarín. As with football club Sevilla FC. When the stadium opened in 1929, it could fit 18,000 people, but after several renovations, today it can accommodate a whopping 60,721 supporters! Football club Sevilla Atlético is the second team of Sevilla FC and has its own stadium where it plays its matches, Estadio Jesús Navas. The club was founded in 1950, but was not incorporated as a subsidiary by Sevilla until the 1958/1959 season.
Currently, the team plays at the fourth level in Spain, but that has not always been the case. They have even played five seasons at the second level in the past. The Sevilla football club often lets talents move on to the big Sevilla FC, of which Sergio Ramos is probably the most famous player.
Estadio Jesús Navas, located in the south-east of Seville, has been the playing field for Sevilla Atlético and the Sevilla women’s team since it opened in 1974. It is also used as a training ground by the first team, Sevilla FC. The stadium was known as Viejo Nervión until October 2018. Then it was named after club legend Jesús Navas. This Sevilla FC winger played the most games for Sevilla’s first team ever. He is also the player with the most awards for Sevilla: three Europa League titles, two Copa del Rey, once the European Supercup and once the Spanish Supercup. Jesús Navas comes from Sevilla’s youth academy and has often shone in the stadium of football club Sevilla Atlético, before making the step up to the first team.

Until the 1960s, Real Betis did not have a second team. At that time, it was customary to stable young talents at local clubs in Seville. Betis Deportivo Balompié was the last Seville football club founded, in 1963. Back then, it was still known under the name ‘Triana Balompié’. Real Betis’ second team, like Sevilla Atlético, is not allowed to participate in the Copa del Rey. In addition, only players under 23 years old are allowed to switch between the first and second teams.
An 8-minute walk from Estadio Benito Villamarín you will find Ciudad Deportiva Luis Del Sol, the stadium of Betis Deportivo Balompié. Besides the second team of Real Betis, the stadium is also used by Real Betis’ women’s team and youth teams. It also serves as a training complex for Real Betis Balompié. In this stadium, the rough diamonds from the youth academy are polished until they are ready to make the step towards the first team.
