The Ardennes in the east and the beach in the west of the country, with lots of cosy towns in between and, above all, plenty of sport. Belgium has it all. The country is not immediately considered a great sports country around the world, yet in recent years the Red Devils have had an eleven-a-side team full of modern-day greats. Belgium’s league is also booming. In addition, the famous Spa-Francorchamps circuit has been a fixture in the Formula 1 season for years. In short, there is plenty to do in Belgium.
Everyone knows international stars Kevin de Bruyne, Eden Hazard and Romelu Lukaku. They are causing a furore in major leagues in Europe. But in recent years, the Jupiler Pro League has been proving to be a vibrant football league itself. Perhaps not so well known abroad, but Club Brugge, RSC Anderlecht and the relatively new Royal Antwerp FC are also clubs that play a role in Europe. Or go for something completely different by visiting a KAA Gent or KV Mechelen match, for example.
The legendary Spa-Francorchamps
Of course, we cannot talk about Belgium without mentioning Formula 1. Indeed, the legendary Spa-Francorchamps has been part of the F1 calendar for years. It is not only a favourite among race fans, but also among the drivers. Is it because of its unique location, in the middle of the Ardennes? Or because the circuit consists of long straights and challenging corners? Or is it the ever-frenzied fans that make Spa-Francorchamps so unique? We are guessing a mix of everything. For fans of Formula 1, this really is a must-see.
